- Speaking
of chili aficionados, let us tell you a
little bit about
the "International Chili
Society", which is currently
headquartered in Las Vegas Nevada, Texas
chili cook-offs, which
started in the late 60’s when H. Allen
Smith wrote an article, "I Cook the
Best Damned Chili in Texas". Wick
Fowler, issued an open challenge to
Smith and the first cook-off was
held in Terlingua Texas.
-
- Other
chili fans heard about the cook-off and
decided to get involved, the most
prominent being C. V. Wood. Woody was
responsible for moving the London Bridge
to Arizona, building Disneyland and
designing the San Antonio Riverwalk.
- According
to Woody his claim to fame was marrying
Joanne Drew, who made more movies with
John Wayne than
any other actress.
Woody
won the Terlingua cook-off twice and flew
others (Carroll Shelby, marching bands,
beauty queens, etc.) to Terlingua, which
is not known as the end of the earth –
it’s 50 miles from there! Woody and
Shelby decided to hold a cook-off in a
location that wasn’t so remote and
started their own organization, the ICS,
at the Balboa Bay Club in California.
- The
ICS started to grow and "World
Championship" cook-offs
became a celebrity extravaganza
attended by Robert Mitchem, Rory
Calhoun, Barry Goldwater, Ernest Borgnine, Dale Robertson, Peter
Marshall and countless others –
- all
chili lovers! Chill Wills was the
official ICS master of cermonies until
his death in 1978.
-
- Our
family got started in the late 70’s
winning a contest
- using
the family recipe in Reno, Nevada,
sponsored by Circus Circus. Our chili
literally changed the way chili was
cooked in
the ICS in that most California chili
was like a stew, with
celery and bell peppers.
